i have had the torpedo vvv for about a month now and there have been no problems with anything until now. i placed the batteries in the charger and suddenly the charger started to produce a strange whining noise. being worried about the batteries leaking or worse exploding, i promptly removed the batteries and disconnected the unit from the source. the only thing i noticed is that when i intially plugged the unit in it's lights flashed quickly between red and green. could anyone tell me if the charger is still safe to use? if the lights flashing like that mean anything? could the batteries explode? does the whining sound mean anything, is it still safe to use and will i need a new charger or could i get a replacement?

I have 2 of these and I never noticed the whine till I got the second one.

Only 1 of mine has this coil whine, sorry that is what this sound is referred to as on a graphics card for computers, but that one in your video is 3 times louder than the one I have that makes noise!

no, it isn't louder than my bass Grin! however it has stopped making the whining noise now, quite worrying if you don't know it's coming (the sound that is) most things charge in silent (tornado batts, phone, xbox pad etc etc) so you don't expect the charger to produce any sound. not so worried now though cheers for the replies.

The charger I have still starts off with the whining noise but as the battery charges it stops, the length of time for the noise lasts is getting shorter.

Hi Guys

I have just spoken with the Technical Team and their advice is as follows:

"The hum comes about because the transformer works by running the alternating wall current through some loops of wire to make magnetic fields, and running the fields through other loops of wire to reconstitute the electric fields at a different voltage.

A side effect of this is a set of periodically alternating mechanical stresses on the core of the transformer. Stresses mean motion, and alternating motion in the right band means audible vibration in the air.

In short, when the transformer is under load (charging a battery) the metal plates inside the transformer oscillate (vibrate) creating a hum or whine."

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Louise
