Just thought I'd see if there was anyone in the military in here. I'm in the U.S. Army Infantry(11B), still a PFC (Private First Class), but enjoying it nonetheless. I'm currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA,  but in the process of getting relocated to Fort Hood, TX. So if anyone in here is in the military, be it U.S. or U.K., feel free to post up!

Shocked Not sure I follow 8Ball  Shocked  At first I thought you were on a submarine Grin  But I won't say anything unkind towards the military at all.

As a matter of fact my son is currently on active duty with the U.S. Navy.  He is a medic.  Been in almost 3 years now of his 5 year tour.
He finished one tour in Iraq and 1 tour in Afghanistan with a marine unit.  And getting ready for a third deployment.

He originally joined to pay off $65K in student loans.  He has a degree in criminal justice and wanted to be a local police officer like my son-in-law.  Now he likes it so much he plans to re-enlist.

I have mixed feelings about the whole military career thing.  But that is his choice.  It would not be mine.  I did my three years and ONE TOUR in Vietnam and that was plenty for me.

But hats off to all the past, present and future military people!!!!!

Hi Horsemen.  Yeah, we're a military family.  My dad fought in the European Theater in WWII and was in the Normandy landing.  I had one uncle in the Navy, and one who's a retired USAF pilot.  He flew B58 Hustlers for a while, and later he flew BUFFs in one tour of Vietnam.  I volunteered for the US sub service, and spent my time in the Navy poking holes in the ocean in the Parche. My son was Army 1st CAV and did two tours as a squad leader in Iraq.  I have the deepest respect for all who served, and are serving in the military.

I understand what you're saying about military careers though.  I received a medical discharge, but even if I could have, I would not have signed an extension after my six year hitch.  My son would have went the "lifer" route if not for a medical discharge after his second tour in Iraq.  I was relieved he was out, but it was hard for me too because I knew he was disappointed he didn't get to finish his career, and he felt like he let his squad down because he couldn't go with them when they went back for the third time.  Anyway, I know how hard it is to have a son or daughter serving overseas, and my thoughts and best wishes will be with you and your son.

Ya know there seems to be a pattern here.  See if you follow this.

GrandFather   WW I
Father            WW II & Korea
Me                 Viet Nam
Son                Iraq & Afghanistan

Why does it seem to me that this country sends every generation off to war Cry  And now EVERYTHING IS ON THE TABLE in Libya...go figure  Cry

Technically it was.  It's just that is is more politically expedient to not get into a 'War'.

Keep it at a 'police action' or a oxymoronic 'peace keeping mission' and the red tape is a lot less.

I'm personally more in favor of covert ops which hopefully remove the reason to go to war or a 'police action' in the first place but those require non-politically motivated intel to work right, which is sort of another oxymoron in itself.   Sad

Yes, I wish they'd get better at the covert stuff too.  The trouble is you need to know so much to spot when your informers are manipulating you and there has been a lot of interfering in some places just because they've chosen a different way of doing things it seems.  Wink

The trouble is you need to know so much to spot when your informers are manipulating you ...

The first thing to realize is that they are ALWAYS trying to manipulate you.

In the post cold war era, it seems that the basic tenants of espionage, manipulating the source to put them in a position where their best option is to tell you the truth, have been set aside for the expediency of getting someone to tell 'you' what 'you' want to hear through physical 'intimidation' and then not corroborating it because it validates what 'you' want.

Very true.  As a matter of interest, has any of what we've found out here from enquiries into Iraq made it into the US media?

I haven't heard anything earth-shattering so I would tend to doubt it.

Why, what has been found?
