just use the pi as a way to connect my drive to the network so I can play files off it on my laptop.

Why not buy a cheap NAS and put your drive in it?
In that way you get something that are especially made for your need.

For those that where interested the Pi has just gone up for pre-order, two companies are going to be dealing with the supply chain. Two links below.

Well I think I'm going to have to pick one up, my mums ancient tower is dying (it was my coding machine 12yrs ago) and she can't afford to replace it; silly fool sent me a cheque for my birthday to buy a "little something" I think I'm going to pick up a Pi using that cash and configure it for her to pick up emails and browse facebook and genes reunited (all she really does on the puter anyway) and present it back to her for her birthday in 10 days  Wink

Did anyone pick up a PI?  It was just an epic fail when i tried. servers all over were crashing and burning with the sheer demand.

Iv registered my interest and il pick on up on their next run though. Looks like an interesting little device.

Did you do programming tara and was it for business or pleasure?   Embarrassed that sounded just wrong

I got out of bed and was sat at my computer at 6am waiting for the announcement, by 6:01 two of the worlds largest electronics suppliers websites were in meltdown Sad Hopefully I managed to secure one from RS components but nothing guaranteed or confirmed yet. I think the foundation made a good move with the licensed manufacturing, it wont be long before these are in plentiful stocks at both farnell and RS then I can get my hands on 4 or 5 of them.

One would be nice Sad Seems there was a bit of a manufacturing cockup and the wrong RJ45 jacks so everything has been delayed while they sort it out.

I very much doubt you'll brick it if all you're wanting to do is get xmbc running. I believe XMBC is already ported and ready to go.

My idea is to take power from my tv converting it to the required 5v and attach the pi board direct to it, basically trying to make my tv a smart tv. Not sure if I can get it to work but worth a try.

I see, well be careful with that 230v hurts when you catch hold of it  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Unless you have some experience with mains voltage and electronics I'd advise looking for a small, off the shelf transformer, or if your TV is modern enough to have USB ports you could utilize those for power.

Blowing stuff up is cool, unless its yourself Cheesy

A few small obstacles to get over, but am lucky enough to have access to a bunch of tech heads in work who are going to see if it's viable option. If it's not then will just have to put my hand in my pocket and buy a new tv with a usb port. Another month that I can buy my torpedo but hey have to keep the wife happy.
