I have been getting a brown nasty tasting liquid in my tanks during use.

How do I avoid this?

You can try blowing down the atty end, hold over a tissue.
The discoloured liquid can get into the Tanks from the coil, the coil eventually gets covered in gunk.

Can anyone please explain to me, how to do a dry burn?   I am guessing that you inhale on the atty without having any juice?

I had trouble finding the thread but here's a little info.

Instead of going through all that work just take the tank off and vape in 3 second bursts every 5-10 seconds until all the juice in the atty is gone and vapor stops, don't inhale as this burning vapor tastes bad. Then you've completed a dry burn and it will vape great again. No need to remove the spike plate or any other special routine. Re prime and filler er up!

Cleaning any way other than just blowing through will void your warranty.

The point here is to burn the crud off the coil that has accumulated over time. It's that simple. Wink
Ceekay has a nice detailed one there. I like seeing the coil while I'm burning it to see my progress but taking the spike off isn't 100% nessacerry. Once the coil is cleanish it will vape like almost new!
