Anyone experiencing a high pitch whine when charging batteries with the Torpedo charger?
The wife & I could hear a high pitch whining noise but couldn’t place where it was coming from, today the wife tracked it down to the battery charger.
I have other similar chargers and they are silent
If this is normal with the Torpedo charger then now I know what it is I can put up with it but if not I think I shall have to contact TW.

Badly wound drop down transformers can whine, I've come across a few of them in my time, normally they are ok, but on the odd occasion they can short (I think the whine is to do with the paper/insulation thickness around each wrap of the coil not being thick enough or in place). The other thing that can whine is a faulty capacitor that is about to blow, you'll know that one, the thing will stop working, probably tripping your RCD in the process, and there will be the most god awful smell of rotting eggs as the elctrolyte vents from the cap.

I would suspect though that it is the former rather than the latter, see if anybody else is having the same problem, it could just be a "feature" of the type of transformer they are using, if not call CS, it's better to be safe than sorry because what you don't want is the transformer going and taking your batteries with it before the diodes have a chance to fail (open hopefully).

That’s sort of the way I was thinking Tara, if everyone has the whine I will be happier using it than I am now, I don’t want to return it if they are all the same.

In that case I will wait and see if it stops Darth.

Mines been left plugged in since it came out of the box.... Not sure when the whine stopped but it did.

Perhaps Caz drank it when I wasn't looking. It's been plugged in about two weeks now if that helps any.

My charger emits the same high pitch whine when charging too....
Only when charging. It stops as soon as the battery is done.

The transformer theory sounds plausable,

I seriously doubt it, modern electrics have too many protections in place, components are designed to fail open, circuit breakers are designed to trip etc.

Some transformers do whine, in fact most do to some extent, it's just that we don't have the hearing of a dog and the frequency is too high for us to detect it. If multiple people are reporting it and in the case of Darth he's had his plugged in for weeks without problem, then I reckon everything is ok. Especially as he reported that his whine subsided, transformers are wound and then dipped in multiple coats of resin/varnish, it could be that these babies are so new that the multiple dipped layers weren't completely dry and needed to harden properly and settle down and the heat and warmth generated through prolonged use does just that Cheesy

When I plugged it in.... It was still cold from sitting in the mailbox at winter temps.... The heat may have worked it in a bit.

Probably should have let it get to room temps first... What can I say

Hmm.. Must be quite loud then? Most people over the age of 25 start to lose the ability to hear much beyond .15khz.. Where things like that to to sit. My wife (being 7 years younger) can often hear high pitched whining from phone chargers and things that I simply am oblivious too?
That said.. I've been a musician most of my life, including playing drums professionally for a few years back in the day. We never used to bother much with niceties such as 'ear plugs' though.. So it's probably fair to say that my ears are slightly shot!  Roll Eyes
Oh well.. Guess being slightly deaf has it's advantages eh?   Wink

"What"? .. I SAID BEING SLIGHTLY DE.. Ah.. Forget it!  Tongue

I can always hear a whine if I put my ear right up to it but from a distance I've only heard it once. I removed then re-inserted the battery and it no longer made the loud whine. Also I'm 30 but can still hear those high pitch noises, we have an anti-youth speaker near some flats that emits a high pitch noise, I can hear it but my wife can't.

My first thought when I opened the Torpedo box was 'gawd that charger looks cheap' but it seems to do the job and the battery doesn't get overly warm so I guess everything is ok. The only other issue I have sometimes is the negative connector doesn't always slide down very easily.

My husband said as long as the batteries don't get hot while charging everything's fine.
